It’s been a while since I talked with you guys. I fractured my foot and it has not only immobilized me physically but also creatively to a degree. Yet, it has gifted me with this thought. We live in a “well” society. When illness, accidents, discomfort, pain, or grief visit us; our first responses are to ignore, run, hide, or disconnect from it. But the reality is all the above-mentioned will probably visit us all in one way or another. So what if we decided to lean into it instead of running from it? There is much to be honored when we embrace the truth of our realities. Embracing our truths is not resigning us from finding solutions, seeking treatments, and praying for relief. Instead, it is looking at it in the mirror and saying we are here today and what is the best way we can honor ourselves?

I was gifted the ability to walk with someone who was chronically ill and it taught me many lessons. His fight taught me that though illness comes it doesn’t have to define you. It also taught me the strength that comes when you embrace the weights of life that can weigh us down. We don’t get to choose many of the things that befall us. But we do get to choose how we carry it. Learn to rest when needed. No prize is being gifted to you by plowing through life. Embrace your humanity. We are not robots. We have strengths and weaknesses. We have days when we carry it well and days when we feel crushed by it. There is no shame in the days that we are crushed. It is just a glimpse into the truth that we all have limits. I’ve learned to just say, “Hello LIMIT, nice to meet you. Should we have tea or coffee?” (smile)

If you need permission, then I give you permission to lean into it! Embrace the fullness of your humanity and rest when needed. This is life!! No need to carry burdens that we can choose to lay down.
